組手 - KUMITE
Kumite, meaning "grappling hands," is the sparring component of karate where practitioners apply techniques learned in kata and kihon (basics) against an opponent. It is a dynamic and interactive form of training that tests a karateka’s speed, precision, and strategic thinking in real-time scenarios.
Karate began to equally emphasize both Kata and Kumite after Master Funakoshi introduced the martial art to Japan. This marked the start of practicing a basic form of Kumite alongside traditional Kata.
Master Funakoshi highlighted the significance of respect in his 20 principles (Niju Kun), stating, "Karate begins with Rei and ends with Rei." This principle underscores the importance of respect and courtesy, especially when starting kumite training.
Kumite is divide into two groups:
Yakusoku Kumite (pre-determined Kumite) In this type of kumite the attacking technique and target are predetermined.J
Jiyu Kumite (free Kumite) In This type of kumite, practitioners are free to test their abilities by employing the attacking and blocking techniques of their choice
